On Canada’s roads today, just 3% of vehicles are low-emission (either hybrid or electric). But that is going to change quickly – 77% of Canadians agree the planet is facing a climate emergency, and climate change was the top issue for many Canadians in the 2019 Federal election. While many Canadians are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint, still relatively few have taken the step of driving a low-emission vehicle – a hybrid or electric vehicle. But while just 3% of vehicles on Canadian roads today are low-emission, this is expected to grow significantly in the next ten years; the Edison Electric Institute projects electric vehicles on North American roads will double by 2021, and the market will be roughly 18 times its current size by 2030.
While just 3% of Canadians today, those driving low-emission vehicles wield financial might – median household income is 27% higher, and those driving low-emission vehicles are employed in senior and influential roles. They have disposable income, and a wide variety of hobbies, activities, and interests.
